NORTH INDIA SECTION OF TEXTILE INSTITUTE (NISTI) was established 1989 under the leadership of two of the finest textile institutional leaders at the time in the personalities of (late) Dr N M Swani, then Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and former Head of the Department of Textile Technology of the Institute and (late) Dr J K Nigam, then Director of Shriram Institute of Industrial Research, Delhi, with able support of Prof V K Kothari and Prof D S Verma of IIT Delhi, and such others as Mr H P Gupta from Birla Group, Dr K C Tapadar, CMD of then Porritts and Spencers (Asia) Ltd (now called Voith Paper Fabrics India Ltd), Prof R C D Kaushik, Director of Technological Institute of Textiles and Sciences, Bhiwani, Mr H C Jain from DCM, Mr Y N Mallah from Poritts and Spencers, and Mr H C Chaturvedi, Managing Director of Shamken Ltd.
All of the pioneering founders were highly respected in TI as well as India’s textile professional circles. NISTI was formally inaugurated on 24 May, 1989 at a well-attended ceremony held at the campus of IIT Delhi. (Late) Mr R M Goodall, Past President of TI and Chairman of Scapa Group PLC UK graced the ceremony. Shortly, thereafter, (late) Dr J K Nigam was installed as the Founding President of NISTI.
NISTI has always enjoyed the largest membership of Textile Institute within the country. Its organic growth was fuelled by regular professional activities engaging both members and outsiders, especially its periodic international conferences.
Until 2006, NISTI remained an organisation governed by rules of conduct framed by the Textile Institute. In 2007 it transformed itself into an Association of Persons registered under the Registration of Societies Act 1860 , with a bank account, followed by PAN registration, and is now governed by the rules and regulations endorsed in its Memorandum of Association . The then Chairman, (late) Mr Aloke Goyal, took the lead to towards this and he was joined by (late) Dr A K G Nair, Executive Director of Pearl Academy of Fashion, Prof V K Kothari and Prof Kushal Sen of IIT Delhi, Dr Sanjay Gupta, then Head of Academics at NIFT Delhi, Dr Kuldip Kr Sharma, Director of Megatech (India) Pvt Ltd and Dr S K Chaudhuri, Regional Director of Woolmark Company. It became formally renamed as NISTI (Regd) or NORTH INDIA SECTION OF THE TEXTILE INSTITUTE (REGISTERED). However, popularly it continues to be referred to as NISTI.
There is a statutory auditor appointed by NISTI’s General Body and the audited accounts and annual returns are submitted to the Income Tax Office and the Registrar of Societies. The Executive Council is elected by the General Body at the AGM and the office bearers are appointed by the newly-elected Executive Council in a meeting immediately following the AGM.
NISTI’s day to day operations are executed by the Chairman-cum-Treasurer with able support of the Honorary Secretary under the guidance of the Executive Council which meets periodically. The General Body of members meets once annually to receive the Annual Report, pass the audited financial accounts, and elect the Executive Council for a one year term. The AGMs have been held since NISTI’s registration as Association of Persons and so far there have been eleven conducted.
